About BBS Club
BBS Club is a community for people who remember the internet before it got optimised.
We talk about the era when computers came in beige boxes, games came in cardboard packaging, and getting online meant listening to your modem negotiate with the phone line for forty-five seconds before anything happened. We talk about the culture, the hardware, the software, and the memories that came with all of it.
What we're about
The internet used to feel like a place you explored. Pages were slow, designs were chaotic, and everything had a handmade quality that is almost impossible to find now. BBS Club exists to keep that spirit alive — not as a museum, but as a living community where people who were there can share what they remember, and people who weren't can learn what they missed.
Our conversations cover:
- The Old Internet — Web 1.0, GeoCities, Flash, ICQ, Napster, and the early web before social media took over
- Retro Gaming — consoles, PC classics, arcades, and the games that defined a generation
- Vintage Computers — DOS, Windows 95 and 98, classic Macs, and the machines that started it all
- Consumer Electronics — Walkmans, CRT televisions, pagers, early mobile phones, and the gadgets that filled our lives before smartphones
- Tech Culture and Media — old magazines, television commercials, science fiction, and the pop culture that surrounded technology in the 80s and 90s
- Repairs and Projects — restoring, modding, and troubleshooting vintage hardware
What we're not
We are not a nostalgia trap. We don't pretend the past was perfect or that everything was better before. We just think some things were worth remembering — and worth talking about with other people who feel the same way.
We have no algorithm deciding what you see. No feed optimised for engagement. No AI-generated content. Every post here comes from a real person with a real memory, a real opinion, or a real question.
The name
BBS stands for Bulletin Board System — the precursor to the modern internet forum, accessed by modem, running on machines in spare bedrooms and university labs. Before the web, BBS systems were where communities formed online. We thought the name fit.
